What do I proofread?
I have experience in proofreading the following material:
  • reference books, textbooks and multi-author books
  • subscription journals
  • guidelines, reports and research
  • theses and dissertations (see my Guidelines for theses and dissertations)
  • study guides and educational material
  • self-help literature.

What can Soundproofs offer me, the client?
Proofreading is the final quality check before a document goes for publication. A proofreader can be expected to:
  • correct typographical, spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors
  • check consistency and accuracy of content, style and design, and that all elements conform with house style
  • check internal consistency including page numbers, table of contents, chapter titles, footnotes, references, and bibliography, appendices, glossary and index
  • ensure figures, tables and illustrations with their captions and labels are correctly numbered and located.

The CIEP page What is proofreading? provides a useful description of what a proofreader does (and does not do).

In addition to the basic functions of a proofreader as listed above, as required I can:
  • offer suggestions to improve the flow, language and sense, and clarify the author’s message for the reader
  • ensure the headings and content follow a logical order
  • compile a style sheet and word list
  • liaise with the author and desk editor to promptly resolve queries and offer solutions to problems
  • collate the changes made by the author, proofreader and others.

I hold Professional Indemnity insurance (including Europe and USA)
Media
  • I can work on hard-copy marking corrections using the BS5261 standard correction symbols, on-screen with PDFs using the Adobe Reader DC commenting tools or in Word using the track changes facility
  • I operate on the Microsoft Office 365 platform, using PerfectIt and Reference Checker
Timescales and charges
This will be negotiated before I agree to take on the job and you agree to hire me, but the following factors will help to establish the timescale and cost:
  • what is the level of complexity and difficulty of the material: Is it straightforward? Is the author a native- or non-native English speaker? Is there a high level of technical content? It is always helpful to provide a sample, perhaps in the form of a chapter, to help calculate the time commitment and fee structure
  • depending on the above, I would expect to proofread and correct 1500 to 3000 words per hour (about five to ten pages)
  • the fee for the job would also depend on the material, and the level of proofreading required
  • I would inform you as early as possible if I anticipated the job would take longer, or cost more, than originally estimated
  • for further information, please refer to my Terms and Conditions.
